# Technical education from 14 is the shake-up schools have needed
Teaching kids AI and manufacturing from age 14 isn't a gimmick. It's a direct admission that the current system has been failing a huge chunk of young people for decades — and someone finally put it in writing.
The plan is straightforward. From age 14, pupils in England will be able to take technical courses tied to real local jobs. AI. Manufacturing. Skills that actually lead somewhere. Andy Burnham is the name attached to it right now, but the idea itself is what matters.
The system we've had isn't neutral
The current school structure has a clear pecking order. GCSEs, A-levels, university. Everything outside that path gets treated like a consolation prize. The kid who wants to work with their hands, or who understands machines better than Shakespeare, gets pushed through the same funnel anyway — and usually comes out the other end with nothing that fits them.
That's not a failure of those kids. That's a failure of design.
Technical skills have always been real skills. They've always led to real careers. The fact that the school system has spent years treating them as lesser says everything about who designed the system and who it was designed for.
Linking courses to local jobs is the actually smart bit
The detail that matters here isn't just "technical subjects." It's that courses are meant to link to local jobs. That's the difference between a policy that moves the needle and one that just rebrands the same wall with a different colour.
A school in a manufacturing town offering manufacturing qualifications. A school in a city with a growing tech sector offering AI courses. That's education that actually understands its community. That's something a kid can see the point of at 14, because the destination is visible from where they're standing.
Young people don't lack ambition. They lack pathways that make sense to their lives.
Fourteen is the right age to start
Some people will say 14 is too young to be specialising. Those people probably had options at every stage and didn't notice. For a lot of young people, 14 is already the age at which the system starts sorting them out. Sets, streams, predicted grades — it's all happening by then anyway.
The question isn't whether 14-year-olds should be making consequential choices. They already are. The question is whether those choices should include something genuinely useful.
Offering technical routes at 14 doesn't lock anyone in. It opens a door that was previously bolted shut until it was too late to matter.
What needs to happen for this to work
The plan is right in principle. But principle isn't delivery.
For this to land properly, the courses have to be properly resourced. That means qualified teachers, actual equipment, and employers who are genuinely involved — not just consulted once in a meeting and forgotten about. Technical education without real-world connection is just repackaged boredom.
It also has to carry weight. If a technical qualification from age 14 still gets treated as inferior when a young person walks into a job interview, the cultural problem hasn't been fixed. The credential has to mean something on the other side of the classroom.
Schools doing this right will need support, not just instruction. The how matters as much as the what.
Our verdict
This is the kind of structural shift that could genuinely change outcomes for young people who've been let down by a system built around one narrow definition of success. Teaching AI and manufacturing to 14-year-olds — and tying it to real local industries — treats technical knowledge as valuable rather than remedial.
Whether it lands depends entirely on execution. But the direction is right. The kids who'll feel this most are the ones who already knew the old system wasn't built for them.
