There's something quietly brilliant about a song that finds its audience before the label even greenlights it — and that's exactly what Jay Wheeler's De Lejitos did.

The track has just climbed 2-1 on Billboard's Latin Airplay chart (dated 29 August), making Wheeler a four-time chart-topper and giving him his second Latin Airplay No. 1 in the space of five months, having led the overall Latin radio ranking back in March. That's not a fluke. That's form.

From A Daughter's Playlist to 6.7 Million Impressions

Wheeler was candid with Billboard about what the song means to him. "It went from being my daughter Aiunii's favourite to becoming a favourite among all my fans, long before my team and I decided to officially release it," he said. That's a telling detail — the fans were already there. The chart just caught up.

The numbers back it up. During the 14–20 August tracking week, De Lejitos pulled in 6.7 million audience impressions in the United States, a 4% rise on the previous week, according to Luminate. It spent three weeks in the Latin Airplay top 20 before parking at No. 2 last week, and now it's at the summit.

The song's journey on Hot Latin Songs has been similarly stubborn. It debuted in the top 20 in April and held the top 10 for nearly 11 consecutive weeks. The one stumble? Karol G's album No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto flooded the chart on its debut week (dated 12 August), knocking De Lejitos from No. 7 all the way to No. 18. It's already back at No. 8 off streaming gains. Some songs just don't go away — because they're not meant to.

This fourth No. 1 on Latin Airplay puts Wheeler alongside prior chart-toppers Viendo El Techo, Dos Tragos, and Si Te Vas (with Jay Balvin), all of which held the top spot for a single week between 2021 and 2026. Whether De Lejitos holds longer remains to be seen, but Wheeler's consistency at radio is now impossible to ignore.

Banda El Recodo Digs Up a Classic

Elsewhere on the Latin charts, Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga are doing something a bit different — and pulling it off. Their new version of La Cama de Piedra, originally a hit for Antonio Aguilar in 1958, has gone to No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay. It's the band's 21st No. 1 on that chart, making this their most successful decade on the ranking — seven leaders in the 2020s alone, surpassing their tallies in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

The cover was produced by Aguilar's son Pepe Aguilar alongside band leader Alfonso "Poncho" Lizárraga. It rose on a 10% jump in impressions to 5.9 million, swapping places with Xavi's Dosis, which dropped on an equal 10% decline to 5.6 million. The symmetry is almost too neat.

With 21 No. 1s, Banda El Recodo now ties Intocable for fourth on the all-time Regional Mexican Airplay list, behind Calibre 50 (29), and Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga and La Arrolladora Banda el Limón de René Camacho (22 each).

Our take: Two No. 1s in the same week, one built on personal sentiment and one on a 66-year-old song. Latin music does not do boring.
