Carra's Said It So Everyone Else Can Stop Tiptoeing Around It

Jamie Carragher is right. Liverpool do not need Bradley Barcola. They need a right winger who actually replaces Mohamed Salah — and those are two very different problems.

Barcola is a talented player. Nobody's disputing that. But going and signing him without addressing the Salah-shaped void at Anfield is like patching a leak in your roof while the floor is caving in. The priorities are wrong.

Carragher knows this club inside out. He played there. He's watched them obsessively ever since. When he says focus on replacing Salah, that's not a throwaway comment. That's someone who understands exactly what was lost when Salah left.

What Salah Actually Was

Let's be honest about what Salah gave Liverpool. Not just goals — though the goals were relentless. He gave them a guaranteed threat on the right side of every single match. Teams had to set up specifically to contain him. He warped opposition defensive shapes just by existing on that flank.

That kind of player doesn't get replaced by a committee decision or a squad upgrade. You replace him with someone who forces the same problem. Someone defenders lie awake thinking about. Liverpool haven't got that right now on the right side, and that absence defines their attack.

Barcola operates differently. He's direct, he carries the ball, he works off the left predominantly. Bringing him in doesn't fix the right wing — it just adds another option in a different area. It's not the answer to the question Carra is actually asking.

The Transfer Narrative Is Getting Muddled

There's a tendency in football media to treat any big-name link as automatically good business. Liverpool linked with Barcola? Must be exciting. Must be an upgrade. Must mean progress.

That's lazy thinking. Liverpool's recruitment needs to be surgical right now. The Salah replacement is the single most important piece of business they can do. Until that's sorted, everything else is noise.

Spending serious money on Barcola — if that's genuinely what they're considering — before nailing down a world-class right winger isn't smart. It's distraction shopping. Clubs do it more than they'd admit. They get swept up in an available player rather than targeting the specific profile they actually need.

Carra Isn't Asking For The Impossible

Some Liverpool fans will push back and say: where do you find another Salah? Fair point. Players like that don't grow on trees. He was one of the best to ever play in this league. Replacing him like-for-like probably isn't realistic.

But the brief isn't clone him. The brief is fill the function. Find a right winger who punishes teams, who gives you 15-plus goals a season from that position, who makes the right side of Liverpool's attack a genuine danger zone again. That player exists somewhere. It might not be a direct replacement in style — but it has to be a replacement in impact.

Barcola does not fit that description for the right flank. That's the point Carragher is making. And it's a fair one.

Our Verdict

Carra hasn't just offered an opinion here — he's identified the actual problem. Liverpool's transfer business this window needs to be built around replacing Salah's function on the right. That is the priority. Everything else, including whatever interest there might be in Barcola, comes second.

If Liverpool end this window with Barcola through the door but no one filling Salah's role, they'll have spent money without solving the real issue. Carragher sees it. The club needs to act like they see it too.
